Advice and counselling skills

Counselling skills, such as active listening and responding appropriately, are important for effective communication. Being able to provide counselling and guidance is a valuable asset for any staff involved in engaging with students. This ensures that you can put the potential student at ease, creating a non-threatening, welcoming and friendly environment.

You should be able to ascertain what level the potential students are and their background, and offer appropriate information and advice for their personal circumstances. In this context, counselling involves building and maintaining a trusting relationship with every student. Developing this skill requires practice, and, therefore, it is the purpose of this section to provide the necessary resources to build upon your own experience.
