When engaging with potential students, you should be able to create the right conditions for an exchange of information between you and the student in a focused and effective way. Although, it is not the intention of this resource to fully train staff to conduct interviews, these notes will examine some of the questioning techniques that can be used during the initial contact with potential students to obtain as much information as possible about their personal circumstances, and at the same time creating a welcoming and friendly environment.

Using the right questions is essential if you are to communicate effectively with students and the skills learned here will enable you to successfully engage with potential students, and rapidly ascertain their personal situation.
